This past year, my parents became old people.

My Dad’s health is declining. This past week Dad had a catheter put in. His bladder is giving him trouble.

Dad is scheduled for a procedure to clear a blockage in his aerobic valve.

Dad doesn’t seem worried. He calmly explained the procedure to me last night. I am still finding it a bit scary.

My mom is a strong woman. She is 87 and taking care of my Dad. It’s a full-time job.

Mom doesn’t complain, she just keeps going. She is staying home more because Dad gets into trouble when he is left alone.

Dad has had a few falls recently. Two of the falls happened when he was home alone. He managed to drag himself to the phone to call 911.

My sister and I suggested that Mom ask the hospital’s social worker about a home health aide for Dad.

Mom and Dad are eligible for in-home help. Mom is looking for a housekeeper, but she is going to continue taking care of Dad at home.

How have they magically become so old? At perspective ages 86 and 87, it is logical for them both to start showing signs of their ages. I just can’t wrap my head around it.

There has been a lot happening with my Mother-in-law this past year too. My husband is spending a lot of time with her these days. This however is another story on another day.
